6. Historical Building Buildings with historic value are regional cultural assets worth preserving. Minimizing noise, disturbance, and damage to the surrounding buildings and providing temporary shoring and support are typical challenges involved in most retrofit projects. Depending on the extends of retrofitting, assessed buildings can have a wide variety of deficiencies, with some buildings requiring far more retrofit than others. Usually the economic feasibility of retrofitting any individual building can only be determined by a building specific evaluation to determine the extent of deficiency; often descriptions of building specific at the conceptual retrofitting are reviewed and their weak points are identified. Modern methods and philosophies of seismic retrofitting, including base isolation and energy dissipation devices, are reviewed. The presentation is illustrated by case studies of actual buildings where traditional and innovative retrofitting methods have been applied.
